How We Live Together

Many young professionals starting careers in new cities seek supportive communities and convenient yet affordable living spaces. Architects have designed coliving spaces for this segment of society, a form of community- building-focused affordable rental housing. My research examines how city characteristics, cultural norms, and economic conditions influence the design of coliving solutions.

Material Consequences

Drawings and study models have long been used as tools by architects to break down a complicated building system, and interesting moments arise from the imperfection of bringing these complicated system back together in a finished design. My exploration focuses mainly on study models, and specifically using the method of unfolding and folding. The virtual peeling away of the facade from the programmed spatial masses in representative models allows the facade to be cut, thickened and sewn etc. The slippage or excess created by the reapplication of the facade to these masses as the design is translated back to the real building gives opportunities to generate new forms and ways for organizing space.
